How can I lead my team more effectively?
To lead any team effectively, whether in business, sports, or any social setting, you need to build a foundation culture of trust and clear communication. Here’s a step-by-step approach:
1. Set clear goals and expectations: Everyone (and that means every single person) must understand the final destination, the route you intend to take and the rules of the game. Use tools like OKRs (Objectives & Key Results) or SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound).
This starts with you as the leader. If you do not have absolute clarity on your destination, what chance do your team have of following your there?
2. Empower your team: When everyone is onboard with the bigger picture (and I mean properly bought into the culture and vision), hand them the reins. Nothing will bring your team together like personal responsibility. “Create the right environment, give them the tools, and then get out of their way.”
3. Provide constructive feedback regularly: After creating the right environment, rules and tools, your job (as the leader) is to watch from a safe distance and keep the ship steady. Give feedback, encourage, advise, and be available to guide – lead by example at all times and play your part in the team effort.
4. Open communication: An open-door policy does not mean you can be interrupted at any time! It means you actively encourage honest communication (always keeping the bigger Team Goal as the context of that communication).
